Kitchen aromatherapy: 3 essential oil food recipes you can try

From health kit to facial masks, aromatherapy has ventured into our kitchen tables too. Not many chefs know the benefits of using essential oils in your daily menus. If you have a holiday plan or want to take a time out for yourself, what can be the best treat for yourself than making recipes using aromatherapy oils? This article will focus on essential oil food recipes that you can try at your home.

Essential oil food recipes: The following recipes use essential oils in the form of highly concentrated preservatives, fragrant/flavorings or hydrosols. Whatever be the case, use essential oils that are within therapeutic grade/food grade quality and ensure that you use them in the appropriate quantity.


1. Rose water German cookies: You will need the following ingredients for this recipe: 1 cup sugar, ½  cup room temperature butter, egg yolk, 1 ½ tbsp vanilla, 1 ½ tsp lemon extract or ½ cup sour cream, ½ tsp baking soda, 1 ½ tsp rose water or Rose Hydrosol, some salt and 3 cups of flour. Add cream sugar with softened butter and beat egg yolk and flavorings to smooth consistency. Next, add baking soda and sour cream into the sugar mixture. Add rose hydrosol, flour, salt and water. Batter the mixture and roll out on floored surface. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutter and bake at a heat of about 325 degrees in the oven.

The cookies thus made will carry a subtle rose flavor. If you want the rose flavor to be more pronounced, use rose otto too.

2. Peppermint Hot Chocolate: This recipe uses Peppermint oil to make hot chocolate with cream and sugar. The ingredients you may require: 1 ½ cups of heavy cream, 1 ½ cups of milk, ¼ cup sugar, 6 oz of bittersweet chocolate, 3 drops of Peppermint, whipped cream for garnish and candy canes. Use a saucepan to combine the ingredients – cream, milk, sugar and chocolate – and cook until the mixture begins to steam. Add 3 drops of Peppermint and blend well. Once the blending is complete, divide the chocolate into mugs and top it with whipped cream. If you want, add candy to each cup. This is a yummy recipe which will be the favorite of kids and adults.

3. Orange oil recipe: This recipe uses a lot of orange in the form of orange juice, blood orange essential oil etc. The following ingredients will be required to prepare this item – 1 cup of soft butter, 2 cups sifted confectioners sugar, 1 ¼ cup of unsifted flour, ¾ cup of corn starch, 3 tablespoons of orange juice and 3 drops of sweet orange or blood orange essential oil. To prepare the recipe, cream butter with essential oil and add ½ cup of confectioners sugar and beat until you get a fluffy consistency. Add flour and corn starch and batter everything. Cover and chill the whole thing for at least two hours. Then, roll out the dough into balls (of your desired shape) and bake in the oven for 325 degrees. Mix the remaining cup of confectioners with sugar and 3 tbsp of Orange juice. Put wax paper under cookies and spoon the orange glaze over them.

Essential oils in cooking: 3 delicious recipes with essential oil flavorings

Many do not realize the true value of essential oils. They think that essential oils serve best only as aromatic substances that can be used in diffusers at home or used along with bath water, as bath salts or in massaging. The uses of essential oils do not end with these. They can be used in the preparation of many delicacies too. Believe it or not, many food manufacturers use essential oils as a unique and cheap way to add flavors to the foods they process. Essential oils also replace the distinct flavor or taste which is lost in processing or refinement of food. You can also use essential oils if there is a lack of ingredients in your kitchen cupboards. For instance, if you there is no ginger in your house, you can add a drop of Ginger oil to get the same flavor. This article will provide you some fun-to-make common recipes wherein you can use essential oils as special ingredients.

Essential oils in food: Essential oils, as you know, are highly concentrated substances. You have to be very careful in using them. This means, you have to measure all the drops that go into your food. Excess use of oils can upset your stomach or spoil your food. If you want to add oils only for the sake of flavor, better to use only a drop or so. Below are a few recipes which use essential oils as flavorings:


1. Appetizers – Russian Eggs: If you plan to make your eggs in this method, you would need the following ingredients: 6 hard boiled eggs, 1 teaspoon of chopped green olives, 3 tablespoons of Mayonnaise, chopped onion, Tabasco, black pepper, chopped parsley, Lemon oil and Grapefruit essential oil. Cut the eggs, remove the yolks and put everything in a bowl except the parsley.  Mix the ingredients to form a paste. When you get the paste consistency, spoon into the white of the egg. Then, add the parsley on a bed of lettuce and serve the dish.

2. Prawns dish: This is a real prawn delicacy. You would need the following to make this: 1 pound uncooked prawns, soy sauce, sherry, vegetable oil, clove garlic, orange (squeezed), 2 drop of Ginger oil, 2 drops of Orange essential oil. Marinade the prawns for sometime before you start cooking. Mix all the marinade ingredients and pour over the uncooked prawns. Leave for about 1-2 hours. Remove the prawns after the time and stir-fry until cooked. Add in the marinade in parts. Once the first part is cooked, add the remaining. Do this for 5 minutes and then serve.

3. Red Meat Marinade: If you look at the recipes, you will notice that essential oils are excellent for any kind of meat or sea food recipes. This Red Meat Marinade recipe is yet another recipe involved with meat. To cook, you need the following: 1 cup of red wine, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 chopped onion, salt, Black Peppercorns etc. You will also need these essential oils: 1 drop of Thyme oil, 1 drop of Marjoram oil, 1 drop of Clove oil and 2 tablespoons of Olive oil. Blend Thyme, Marjoram and Clove into Olive oil. Add red wine to the meat and add garlic, onion, Orange oil. Rub the meat with 1 tbsp of the Olive oil blend and place the meat in red wine. Leave the meat for about eight hours and then, cook it as you please.
